Notes from the Summit

Carol Lamarche

The atmosphere at the STC 2012 Summit, the annual STC conference, was electric, with terrific presenters inspiring conversation and new directions.

The May 20-23 event was well organized, comfortable, and conducive to networking. The Chicago STC chapter outdid themselves with their hospitality. Check out the photo gallery that the Chicago Chapter set up: http://www.flickr.com/photos/stcchicago/.(external link)

The Technical Editing SIG itself was well represented at the 2012 Summit, with many SIG leaders, members, and members-to-be in attendance.

Several SIG leaders, including the SIG co-managers, represented the SIG at the Summit, beginning at Leadership Program.

SIG leaders attending the summit included co-managers Carol Lamarche and Lori Meyer, Treasurer Daniel Riechers, Membership Manager Andrea Wenger, Webmaster Rick Sapir, Quarterly Meetings Manager Ann Marie Queeney, Fundraising Events Manager Li-At Ruttenberg, Scholarship Fund Manager Rebekka Anderson, Eventbrite Manager Pat Moell, and longtime volunteer Kelly Schrank – among others possibly! (Whew!)

Our SIG networking breakfast was held at a challenging hour of the morning according to some, but still gave us a chance to connect with old and new friends, and have the first of two breakfasts for the day.

The SIG business meeting was small but powerful. Several people volunteered for SIG leadership roles. A hearty welcome to our new volunteers, including Alicia Kerns, Communications Manager, and Gwendolynne Bar, Watercooler Chats volunteer!

At the awards banquet, several SIG members were celebrated with STC fellowships and associate fellowships. Congratulations to the honorees!

  • Patricia Moell, Fellow
  • John Kohl, Associate Fellow
  • Lori Meyer, Associate Fellow
  • Heather Sommerville, Associate Fellow

Additionally, the Technical Editing SIG was awarded two prestigious honors: the Community of Excellence Award and the Pacesetter Award. Well done, Technical Editing SIG!

We’re looking forward to Summit 2013, in Atlanta, Georgia. It will mark STC’s 60th annual conference, and promises to be at least as lush as this year’s event. Stay tuned to http://summit.stc.org/(external link) for details.
